Warrant of Fitness (WOF)

We can complete a WOF inspection with your vehicle service, saving you time and money, plus we're close to the centre of Dunedin.

A WOF is a periodic safety inspection that is compulsory for light vehicles: car, station wagon, van, 4WD vehicle or trailer. Its purpose is to ensure that your vehicle meets the minimum road safety standards and is safe to drive on the road.

Without a valid WOF, your car insurance is invalidated, your car is illegal (and potentially unroadworthy) and you risk being hit with a hefty fine.

When is a WOF required?

It’s a legal requirement to have your vehicle inspected for a WOF:

  • Every 6 months, for vehicles first registered before year 2000
  • Every 12 months for vehicles first registered after year 2000

Vehicles less than three years old will be issued a WoF that expires on the third anniversary of their first registration or 12 months after their current WoF expiry – whichever is longest

What a WOF inspection covers?

A WOF inspection requires a qualified tester to carry out a range of safety checks on the interior and exterior of your vehicle as well as under the bonnet and underneath your vehicle. It includes:

  • Tyre condition
  • Brake operation
  • Structural condition
  • Lights, doors and windows
  • Windscreen washers and wipers
  • Safety belts and airbags
  • Speedometer
  • Steering and suspension
  • Exhaust and fuel system
